Income tax calculator formula

The calculator works out taxable income for each regime, applies its tax slabs and then checks rebate, surcharge, relief and cess.

Taxable income = normal income − allowed standard deduction − eligible amounts entered

Slab tax = tax from each income band added together
Tax after rebate = slab tax − allowed rebate
Final tax = (tax after rebate + surcharge − relief) × 1.04

Regime difference = old-regime tax − new-regime tax

The old and new regimes use different slabs and allow different deductions. The calculator never adds a deduction that you did not enter.

This tool covers normal slab-rate income. Special-rate income such as some capital gains, lottery winnings or crypto needs a fuller tax calculation.

Example with numbers

A resident employee below 60 has salary of ₹15,00,000. Under the new regime, taxable income is ₹14,25,000 after the ₹75,000 standard deduction. Estimated tax is ₹93,750 plus ₹3,750 cess, or ₹97,500. If eligible old-regime amounts reduce old taxable income to ₹11,20,000, the old-regime estimate is ₹1,54,440 including cess.

What does this income tax calculator compare?

India has an old tax regime and a default new tax regime for individual taxpayers. Their slab rates, standard deductions and allowed claims are not the same.

This calculator places both estimates side by side. It explains the numbers but does not tell you which regime to choose.

How to use the income tax calculator

  1. Enter annual salary and other normal slab-rate income.
  2. Choose the age band and confirm residence where asked.
  3. Enter only deductions, HRA and home-loan interest that you have checked as eligible.
  4. Calculate and compare taxable income, rebate, tax before cess and final tax.

What the results mean

  • Taxable income: income left after the amounts entered for that regime.
  • Tax before cess: slab tax after the calculator’s rebate, surcharge and relief checks.
  • Final tax: estimated tax including 4% health and education cess.
  • Difference: the gap between the two regime estimates.

How this tax comparison works

Each regime is calculated separately. Income is reduced only by the fields allowed in that side of the calculator, then the correct normal slabs are applied.

The engine checks the resident rebate and relevant marginal relief around the limits it supports. Four per cent cess is added last.

Why an old-versus-new regime calculator is useful

  • It shows both regimes using the same income details.
  • It does not silently assume deductions or exemptions.
  • It displays taxable income and tax stages, not only one total.
  • You can change one input and see what caused the difference.

Why your filed tax or TDS may be different

A real return may include capital gains, house-property loss, perquisites, relief, foreign income, loss set-off or other items not covered here.

Employer TDS is an estimate during the year and can be adjusted later. Final tax also depends on correct eligibility, documents and the law for that tax year.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator compare old and new tax regimes?

Yes. It calculates both sides separately from the income and eligible amounts entered by you.

Does it add 80C or HRA automatically?

No. Enter only the old-regime amounts that you have checked and can support.

Does the result include cess?

Yes. The final estimate includes 4% health and education cess.

Does it calculate capital-gains tax?

No. This version is for normal slab-rate income and does not calculate special-rate income.

Why is my TDS different from this result?

Payroll may use different income details and changes its estimate during the year. TDS is also not always the final tax.

Does the lower result mean that regime is best for me?

No. The page reports an estimate. Eligibility, filing rules and other income may change the final position.
